Being properly prepared for your consultant interview is more than just reading all of the latest NHS documents that you can find. It is about understanding your candidacy well enough to be comfortable talking about any aspect of it with authority and in a way that entices the interview panel to see you as the perfect solution to their problems.
So, this is a little tricky to understand – partly because it goes against the standard (lazy) thinking involved in interview preparation. You need to appreciate that you have two main goals in your interview:
- Sell your skills to meet the needs of the interview panel and their organisation
- Gain rapport with the interview panel
I want to focus on the first goal in this article. You must understand what the organisation needs from you. The answer will really be about the problems that they worry about and need to solve. It won’t just be – “they need a consultant to do the work”. It will be that they need problems with organising funding of the services, sorting out service delivery with the European Working Time Limits, managing the training needs of the organisation, fulfilling NICE and CQC requirements, etc. So, your task in preparing for your interview really has to focus on how you can help the interview panel to understand all of the ways in which you can help them to solve these specific problems.
